Interested in becoming a referee?

Referees play a significant role in our game. Most importantly, they keep the shooting environment safe. Then, their goal is to offer each shooter an equal opportunity to maximize his/her shooting success.

Becoming a licensed referee is easy. First, you need some field experience. Pull targets for your friends and during league shoots at your club. But, you need to know the rules too! Study the rules, which can be found here:

2025 NSSA Rule Book

When you’re ready, download and print the following documents:

National Skeet Shooting Association Referee Test: NSSA Referee Test.pdf

National Skeet Shooting Association Referee Application: NSSA Referee Application

Take the exam and fill out the application. Mail both to either:

Jim Thompson, NYSSA Chief Referee, 1701 Brace Road, Victor, NY 14564

-or-

Dan Caryl, NSSA Chief Referee, C/O NYSSA, PO Box 13, Honeoye Falls, NY 14472

There is a $10 fee, so include a check for $10 made out to the NSSA.

Your exam will be corrected and returned to you. The NSSA will then mail you your referee credentials, good for three years.
